Communities of Recovery: NIATx Tools for Change

A Smart Approach to Improving Care

Based at the University of Wisconsin, NIATx, the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment, is an industry coalition that works with behavioral health treatment providers to help them improve treatment access and retention. Specifically, NIATx is focused on process improvement in four main areas:

  • Reduce waiting times
  • Reduce no-shows
  • Increase admissions to treatment services
  • Increase the treatment continuation rate

In partnership with 15 local outpatient treatment providers, DBHIDS launched a pilot project with NIATx in the summer of 2007 to implement process improvements within these targeted organizations. In less than one year, two-thirds of the providers reported improved service levels.

DBHIDS launched a second phase of this project beginning 7/1/08. The goals were to expand the NIATx process to 14 additional treatment providers and to improve DBHIDS policies and procedures around paperwork, and access to care/authorizations.

Key NIATx Founding Partners:

  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Paths to Recovery Program
  • Center for Substance Abuse Treatment's Strengthening Treatment Access and Retention
  • National Institute on Drug Abuse
